  • Physical description
Pencil drawing on paper folded on the left side and mounted on cardboard
  • Description
The top half of the drawing depicts a designed monument base consisting of a pedestal on clawed feet. The pedestal is decorated with an unfinished floral border at the top. Underneath the border is a panel inset depicting an allegroacl scene. A kneeling male figure in Roman attire in the center of the penel is being crowned with a laurel wreath by a seated Britannia on the far right of the panel. Britannia wears a crown and rests her hand on a shield by her side. Three allegorical figures stand to the left of the panel and behind the kneeling figure. The figure farthest to the left is a male in classical dress holding a large scroll. The central of the three figures is a female figure in classical garb holding a cloumn capital. The female figure farthest to the right holds what is possibly a musical instrument. The bottom half of the drawing is a designed portrait panel and floral decorative motifs. The panel insets are drawn on the same page and separated by a written scale. It is therefore possible that both panels benefit from the written scale and were meant for the same monument. Otherwise, the papers folding suggests that the page was folded in half, with one side faeturing on monumental panel and the other side depicting a panel for an entirely different monument.
