  • Description
The designed monument is an obelisk on a plinth with six figures. On the far left of the plinth is a dying male figure, wearing a plumed helmet and holding a sword, laying upon a rock and supported by the central figure of Neptune. Beneath Neptune lies a trident and a large fish. A female angel, Victory, stands on the right side of the plinth and holds a palm branch in one hand and a wreath out over the dying figure in the other. Above these three figures stands another female leaning upon the Britannia shield with her hand on her chest. To the left of this figure, a lion stands on the rock above the dying man. In the existing monument in St. Paul’s Cathedral, the figures of Neptune, the dying hero, Victory and the fish remain with the lion and female figure holding the shield having been omitted from the final design.
