\f1\fs22 On his visit to the Cathedral on October 21\super st \nosupersub 1958 Theodor Heuss made the following address:\par
\ldblquote The German people have asked me to hand to you, Mr Dean, and to the Chapter of St Paul\rquote s Cathedral this crucifix and these two candlesticks. Our gifts are a token of our sincere wish to serve, together with the British People, the cause of Peace in the World. It gives me great satisfaction that the altar furnishings carved by a German artist in the early 18\super th\nosupersub century are to find a place of honour on the altar which was created by the architect of this Cathedral, Sir Christopher Wren. May all those who come to this crucifix be filled with the spirit of Peace\rdblquote .\par
The reply by The Dean:\par
\ldblquote Mr President, On behalf of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul\rquote s I accept with deep gratitude the gifts which you have given to our Cathedral. They will remain here as a token of your good will through the centuries. What could be more significant and more moving than that your gift should take the form of the symbol of that sacrifice and death which were offered for the reconciliation of men with God and with one another? We pray that the barriers which divide may be over-thrown and the spirit of Christ unite us all in a common service\rdblquote . \par
