Caen and Reigate stone. \par \par Beyond known foundations still underground, and other stones yet to be discovered, this collection of Romanesque and Gothic stones represents all that physically remains of the structure of the Pre-Fire Cathedral ca. 1080 AD to ca.1666 AD. The collection includes tracery from stained glass windows, crenulations from tombs, painted portions of shrines as well as basic building blocks. \par \par \pard The Lapidarium in conjunction with written and pictorial records is an invaluable point of reference, telling us not only what the Cathedral looked like but also how it was used - the type of structures that were needed in the daily life of the Cathedral. The stones were excavated in the immediate vicinity of the present building by the Surveyor F.C Penrose who was deliberately exploring the extent of the medieval structure. They have rested in their present arrangement since a least 1906 and this may be the display which Penrose put together at the end of the nineteenth-century.\cf0\f1\fs17\par }
