The designed monument is a pedestaled fluted column on a raised plinth and topped with a figure of Lord Nelson. Inscirbed on the column are the words ‘Trafalgar’ and ‘Nile’, both encricled by wreaths. The inset on the column pedestal depicts the dying figure of Nelson supported by surrounding men. The drawing shows three figures: Lord Nelson, an angel, and a female figure supporting a spear, with a plumed helmet at her feet. To the right of the column stands the angel Victory, holding a palm branch and raising an arm towards the figure of Nelson above. On the left sits the female figure of Britannia, her head bowed, resting upon a Union Jack shield and holding a spear with a plumed helmet at her feet. Two tridents encircled with laurel weathes decorate either side of the plinth.

Access is strictly by appointment only with the architectural archivist. Material dating from 1990 to the present day is not currently available for public consultation. Some records are subject to a closure period of 75 years under the Data Protection Act.
