- DescriptionThe Articles of Agreement concern the construction of a monument in St. Pauls Cathedral honouring Lord Rodney Vice Admiral of England, ‘in Memorial of his Gallant and Important Services the Protection which he gave to the West Indian Islands and the Commercial Interests of this Kingdom. The agreement is between the monument’s maker, Chalres Rossi, and the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty’s Treasury under King George III and dated 1811. The agreement lists the intended location of the monument as under the West Window on the right hand side of the entrance into the North Transept of the Cathedral Church. The agreement details that all the materials of the monument be of the best statuary marble except for the Plinth which, according to the insturctions of the Surveyor of St Pauls, should be made of the best Portland Stone. The agreed upon dimensions are listed: ‘the Lower Plinth thereof to be of the heighth of of one foot nine inches, and the upper Plinth thereof to be of the heighth of four inches, the Pedestal whereon the Principal Figure is to stand to be of the heighth of two feet and four inches from the said upper Plinth, the statue of the late Lord Rodney (being the principal Figure to be placed on the said Pedestal and and to be of the heighth of seven feet and eight inches, and the heighth of the right hand Figure representing Fame to be seven feet and six inches, and the heighth of the Figure on the left hand representing Clio the Historic Muse to be seven Feet six Inches, supposing it to be upright and the said Monument and the Figures and Ornaments thereof to be in all other respects according to the said Plan or Design thereof annexed to these presents together with such Inscription thereon as shall be furnished by the said Lords Commissioners’. The completion of the monument is detailed as being within four years of the signed agreement and Rossi’s payment upon completion is listed as six thousand three hundred pounds.
