Description
Photogravure of 'First Reading of the Bible in the Crypt of Old St Paul's Cathedral, London', 1846, from a painting by Sir George Harvey (1806-1876). The portrait depicts a narrative from spring of 1540, soon after Edmund Bonner's installation as Bishop of London while Cromwell was still in power. The Bible, chained to a pillar, is being read aloud by John Porter (thought to have died while imprisoned in Newgate for publicly reading aloud the Bible) to an assemblage of people of all ages and conditions.
